This year has been a year of discovering what my dreams are and actually taking steps towards them. So many times in life, we have dreams and we let them fall to the back burner and allow other priorities to take the energy and resources we have. I am a perfect example, it has been my dream to finish my education in order to become a licensed counsellor and even more than that, my big dream would be to teach others so that they could also become licensed counsellors. This dream means more education, quite a bit more. I officially started back to school in April and even though it is exhausting working full time and going back to school, it has also been pretty amazing.
I took 6 years off school and I do find it intimidating at times, however when I put it back into perspective with my big dream it becomes more manageable. I have also decided to start writing again. I let my life get so cluttered with other things that I put writing to the back burner. I was Skyping with my parents a few weeks ago and I shared with them that Ihad been wrestling with writing again and the time investment it would take. Through this conversation, my dad challenged me to start back to writing sooner than later. He pointed out, that my writing impacted him and so many other people. Even know this, it has still taken three weeks to get myself behind the keyboard and actually let the words flow to the screen.
Both my writing and counselling are things God has called me to, and I should give it more priority! Why then did it take me so long to get back to these things? I allowed my life to become filled with other things. I have been busy. BUSY! This word has defined my life for so long. When people ask me how I am doing, I often hear myself say "Good. Busy, but good." Being busy has made it really difficult for many of us to pursue our dreams, even our God-given ones.
We all have dreams. What is yours? If you aren't sure what it is, take some time to discover it; you may be surprised. Once you discover your dream, it is time to take steps towards it. You may be thinking it is too late and there is no reason to pursue it. I am here to tell you that it is not too late, do not wait! If you are waiting for things to line up perfectly before you take steps towards your dream, then you will be disappointed. Life is messy and rarely do things line up the way we want them to. If money is the reason, start saving even $50 per month to make it happen. If time is the issue, wake up a bit earlier, watch less Netflix, spend less time on social media; I am sure you can think of ways of making the time if you really try. No matter what is holding you back, figure out a strategy to deal with it and start taking small steps towards your goal.
Lastly, there are almost always set backs, do not let these set backs derail you. When an obstacle presents itself look at it as on opportunity; an opportunity to overcome! Every obstacle can be moved, it may take time, it may take energy, it may take planning, you may even need to ask others for help...however it can be done! Do not give up, keep going! One day you will open your eyes and you will be living your dream and it all started with one small step forward.
