So the question that has been going through my mind is what exactly defines leadership? Is it a characteristic that enables you to lead others or is it a quality in you that others wish to emulate. Maybe leadership is more about guiding than directing, and more about mentorship than supervision. If we were to look at the people who impacted us most in our lives, were those people the mentors, or the supervisors?
So what is the difference between a mentor and a supervisor? I believe compassion is part of what sets the two apart. A mentor has compassion for the people they are mentoring and an attitude of trying to come alongside to help, whereas a supervisor is there to watch you and ensure you are behaving in the correct manner. I believe every great leader has to have a level of compassion for those they are leading to truly be effective. I look at Jesus and His ministry, He was followed by thousands, yet He did not have one advertising campaign. His compassion for people drew people to follow Him and listen to Him.
My challenge to you this week is for your to try to be compassionate and see what happens. Feel free to let me know what happens by filling out the contact info below.
