Psalm 91 is an amazing chapter in the Bible. It starts with "Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust."
I have read this verse so many times, however this time I got a fresh revelation from it and it really hit me. In order for us to be able to rest in the shadow, we must first dwell in the shelter. What does this mean? Well, in my walk with God dwelling is simply spending time with God. Spending time in His presence, getting to know Him in a deeper way and trusting that He will protect you in the shelter. In other words we will not find the rest we are seeking until we first trust God with our lives and allow Him to be in control. I think of all of the road trips I have ever been on and I rarely sleep on car trips because normally I do not trust not being there to help by watching for possible hazards on the road. This is because I have control issues, giving God complete control is hard for me and yet when I trust Him fully, I am able to hand over my cares and concerns and allow His peace and joy to become my rest. We are very busy people and we all need rest. It may be time to just spend some time with God, getting to know Him better and learning to trust Him and His shelter so we can let go of the things we hold so tightly to and rest.
