We have all heard that God hates divorce, and I believe that he does. He hates divorce because it hurts his children. There is no part of divorce that is not painful. Marriage is designed to be a lifetime commitment between two people and God's perfect plan is that it remains that way.
There are several people out there that are now frustrated or filled with guilt or shame. Please let those feelings go. God does not condemn you, and neither do I. There are circumstances that each person faces and sometimes there is no other alternative. God has forgiven you, forgive yourself as well.
I believe that God may have an even deeper reason why he hates divorce, and this is what I would like to focus on today. All throughout Scripture God compared the church to His bride. If God views us as His bride, then it would make sense that God hates divorce. Throughout Scripture God is telling us that He will never leave us or forsake us, that we can never be separated from His love. When we read that God views us as His bride and we know that many marriages end in divorce, this shakes our faith in God's words to us. We wonder what it will take for Him to finally give up and walk away from us.
I believe God hates divorce so much because it erodes our confidence in His relationship with us. God loves us with an everlasting love and His love will never fail us. God's love for you will never diminish. He loves you no matter what! He will never divorce you. No matter how much you believe you may have failed Him, his love for you never changes.
How do we know this? By watching His relationship with Israel all throughout the Old Testament. Israel was God's chosen people yet they were constantly choosing to make false gods and serving them, this is likened to adultery in a marriage. They were cheating on God and yet He remained faithful. In the prophets there are a couple of time when God calls out Israel as a prostitute because of their worship of other gods and idols. Yet God remained faithful to them giving them chance after chance to repent and change their ways. What marriage could survive wave after wave of adultery? Only God has the kind of love that can survive this.
If God is faithful to Israel when they were constantly turning their backs on Him, how much more will God be faithful and loving to us? If you believe you are not worthy of God's love, please hear me today and know that you are definitely worthy, because God's love is for everyone!
