Eve, The Woman Who Lost Everything

Genesis 3:23-24 So the Lord God banished them from the Garden of Eden, and he sent Adam out to cultivate the ground from which he had been made. After sending them out, the Lord God stationed mighty cherubim to the east of the Garden of Eden. And he placed a flaming sword that flashed back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.
Eve gets the short end of the stick. Every woman who has ever gone through the pain of childbirth knows that it is a direct result Eve’s disobedience. Whenever a man asserts his authority over a woman it is a reminder of Eve’s failure. The one thing I never took much time doing was putting myself in Eve’s shoes.
She opens her eyes for the first time, the light of the sun slightly blinding her, as her eyes come into focus, she sees God standing above her, his loving face beaming at her, his outstretched arms reaching out for her. He picks her up, gently bringing her to her feet, as she tries to steady herself on her legs for the first time, the strong arms of her husband Adam hold her. Once steady she sees a garden filled with colour and life spanning out before her. The sounds of the garden fill her heart and soul as she hears the songs of the birds entangled with the waters of the rivers and the sounds of the other animals that surround them.
WOW!
Each day in the garden was an adventure, discovering all the different trees, animals, birds, flowers. Everything in the Garden of Eden was in complete harmony, God, man, woman, animals, and plant life. Imagine what it was like for her, so much love, so much joy! Can you imagine a life without pain or disease? Life was perfect!
One day while she is walking through the garden on one of her adventures, a serpent slithers through the branches, and interrupts her perfectly delightful day. This serpent had been patiently waiting in the shadows, waiting for her to be vulnerable, waiting for her to be alone. The serpent speaks to her and the lies that he speaks bombards her mind, making its way into her soul. His deception was based in truth, but it was twisted (Genesis 3:1-6).
Does this sound familiar? It does to me. I have failed, but the lie that sneaks its way in is that I am a failure. It takes the fact that I have failed and twists it making it part of my identity, but I was not created as a failure. If I believe this deceptive comment, it keeps me from trying, it keeps me from moving forward, it keeps me stuck. Let’s get back to Eve’s story.
Her heart is convinced by the words of deception, and she runs back to Adam, brings him to the tree in question and they both eat the fruit. God did not lie to them, had they not eaten from that tree they would have lived forever with God in the garden, instead they ate and from that point forward death was a certainty… inevitable.
Everything Eve knew to that point shifted. She was kicked out of the only home she ever knew and was never allowed to return. The close relationship she had with God was changed forever. No more daily walks through the garden talking to him freely. Each day Adam would have to work in the fields, and she would be under his authority. Pain, disease, and death were introduced into life and every day Eve had to live with the knowledge that she had changed everything not only for herself but for every generation to come. Can you imagine the amount of guilt and shame that must have hung in her heart? One deception, and she lost everything!
How many times in life have you been derailed by a lie, a deception, or a truth twisted into untruth? How many of us have lost days, weeks, months, years, maybe even decades believing lies that were holding us back from our destiny, slowly destroying our lives?
When I was living in Calgary, I believed a lie that I did not deserve a husband that loved God and would treat me well. This lie resulted in me not waiting for the right person, but taking whatever relationship came my way. The damage these relationships did to my heart was extensive because these people were not meant to be in a relationship with me. God works all things together for good and each step of my road God planned for in advance. I now have an amazing husband who loves God and treats me so well. God intended for me to have it, but if I had continued to believe the lie, I believe I would still be living in the same destructive patterns.
Personal Note: Our culture has made truth subjective, however I believe in absolute truth. This truth never wavers, is unchanging and is never subjective. When I embrace the absolute truth that God has revealed to us through his Word, I see the difference in my life. I have peace, joy, and stability. My encouragement for you today is that there is absolute truth, and it can set you free from the lies, the deceptions and the twisted truths that have worked their way into your heart!
Eve's story can be found in Genesis 2-3 in The Bible. The Bible gives us a basic story, the rest that I wrote was how I imagine life would've been like for her. She inspires me because she moved on with her life after she lost everything and she made the most of her life after her failure. She had a family and did not let her failure hold her back from the future God had for her. May her story inspire you not to give up either!
