Facebook and other social media has taken our world by storm and many people are so new to this type of technology that many don't understand it as well as they think they do.
First of all read the fine print when joining a social media group some have disclaimers that say that they have the rights to anything you post as soon as you close your account. This means all of your pictures, your private messages, personal information, everything. This may seem safe for those who think they will want to stay a part of social media for their entire life, however one thing to think of is when you pass away will your account remain open or will it be closed down due to inactivity. At that point are your children safe? Did you post their pictures or any of their information. It is just something to think about.
Secondly, People need to realize that once something is put on the internet it is there forever. Even if you delete something it is still stored on a server somewhere. One day I lost three pages from this website because of a server error, within two hours they found the missing pages and uploaded them again. This was a great thing for me, however, think about everything you have ever posted, even the things you regretted and deleted. Those things live on forever in cyber space. My point with that is be very careful about what you post.
Thirdly, people these days want to know what type of people they are friends with, in business with, or hiring for that open position. If they were to see your social media page would they be impressed? Would they be shocked? Are you the same person online that you are in real life? Hopefully you are.
Lastly, social media has become the new way to bully other people. If someone doesn't like you they can write stuff about you whether it is true or not for the whole world to see. Nothing seems private anymore. I have seen how this affects people first hand. Social media has become a new place to be able to be rejected. We look at our world and wonder why so many fall into depression, maybe we need to take a hard look at the social media dilemma we all face.
Am I saying social media in and of itself is destructive ... no. It is how people choose to use it. Social media is a great way to connect with people and even stay connected even with long distances separating you. Social media is a great way to keep all of your friends informed of all of your parties, events and even your birthday.
More and more choices for social media are emerging. One that I am enjoying right now is a Christian based one called dustoffthebible.com. It has been a refreshing change for me.
Just remember one thing before joining a social media group, read all the fine print and make sure it is a community you want to be a part of, and make sure you are true to who you really are whether it be online or out in the real world.
Social media could be absolutely amazing if everyone loved each other and encouraged one another through it. If you have a group that is like that hold onto that group and may many be blessed by these groups.
