There are many of us who live in the past and are not truly experiencing our present. We wonder about all the things we could have done differently and we drown in the sea of what-ifs. We think about all we have lost and lose sight of everything we have gained. We focus on our failures and seem to dismiss our victories. Why? Why are we so determined to live in the darkness of the past? Why are we so focused on our short comings in the past instead of how we succeeded? I believe it is our adversary wanting to make us in-effective in our present walk with God and to be so focused on the negative in our past that we end up having an image of ourselves that is not accurate.
If we focus on the past too much it is much like this picture where the present is blurring past and we are missing all that is going on around us. So how do we change this phenomenon?
I just finished reading a book written by Max Lucado called "Facing Your Giants", which I highly recommend. He says we need to carve our past victories in stone and write everything else in the sand. Meaning the victories are the things in our past we need to focus on, the dirt and the filth we need to let just wash away. Instead of focusing on all the negative in the past, let us take the time to carve all of our victories in stone! God wants us to see our victories and realize He is always there for us.
