My Sweet Song

June 29, 2022

There is so much power in the music we listen to. Have you ever heard a song that causes you to involuntarily start moving to the beat of the music or caught yourself singing along with the lyrics. The most powerful songs can move us emotionally even bringing a tear to your eye.

There are also the songs that drive you crazy. As soon as you hear it you are hunting for a different radio station or ready to get out of the listening vicinity. I have been doing a lot of driving lately and I realize how the music I listen to can change my outlook, my mood and at times even shift my perspective.

On one such driving trip a week ago a song came on my Spotify playlist and the lyrics were catchy, but the melody was driving me crazy. I had my playlist on random and in the 90 minutes I was driving it came up 4 more times. This is interesting because my playlist is over 5 hours long, yet this song kept taunting me.

It intrigues me, because there are some songs that bring me such joy, such inspiration, I can't help but put them on repeat. I am even guilty of playing them so many times anyone else would be sick of them.

Where am I going with this? Good question...

What one person considers the most annoying song could be the one song that is set on repeat for another. We are all different. We all have things about us that drive some people crazy and other people can't get enough.

My husband loves DAD jokes. I am ok with them, but not when he goes on a 15 minute rant. I am so done, yet my mom loves it, she is in stitches the whole time. When I first met Walter - my husband - I was like my mom and found myself laughing all the time. Now that I have heard some of the jokes hundreds of time it does not make me laugh the way it did the first few times. It is great that he has so much more to offer than just DAD jokes.

Each of us is unique and we need to celebrate the fact that we are different. Surround yourself with people who want to put you on repeat and not switch the station, they are out there and waiting for you to find them. For those who have come from loving the sweet song of you to moving on, it is ok let them find a new melody. Some people are only meant to enjoy our sweet song for a time.

Personal Note: Each of us is a sweet song worthy of being put on repeat. Look for those who are drawn to what you have and look for those you are drawn to as well.
