One of my favorite songs is from a long time ago by a Christian group called 4HIM. The name of this song is "The Basics Of Life". This song may be old, but the lyrics become even more relevant as each day passes.
Verse 1
We’ve turned the page, for a new day has dawned
We’ve re-arranged what is right and what’s wrong
Somehow we’ve drifted so far from the truth
That we can’t get back home
Where are the virtues that once gave us light
Where are the morals that governed our lives
Someday we all will awake and look back
Just to find what we’ve lost
Chorus
We need to get back
To the basics of life
A heart that is pure
And a love that is blind
A faith that is fervently
Grounded in Christ
The hope that endures for all times
These are the basics,
We need to get back
To the basics of life
We live in a world and a society that says homosexuality is perfectly fine, abortion is commonplace, and pushing God completely out of society is the norm. Drugs can be found pretty much anywhere, addiction is the way people are choosing to deal with their problems, and sex has become something we do for fun. People are allowed to attack Christian publicly without repercussions, but you say one word about homosexuality and you could find yourself in a jail cell. Trying to legalize prostitution to supposedly protect women, abortion is supposedly saving women's lives and persecution of the church supposedly never happens. This is the world we live in. What has happened to our world breaks my heart. Our forefathers included God in everything and here we marginalize anyone who wants God to be a part of anything in their lives.
Why is violence, chaos, depression, suffering, becoming rampant and taking over the world? I believe that this is happening because very few have a pure heart and do things out of their compassion for others; very few love people just because they are people, not because they have things in common with you, have the same social status, or look a certain way. Very few people have a passionate, fervent relationship with God.
We as the church need to stop being focused on church dynamics and just love each other. We need to share the hope that is found only in Christ; not because we are told to but because we love people so much it breaks our hearts to see any miss out on this amazing relationship we have with God. We as the church need to spend more time talking to God and less time working for him. Jesus' life is the perfect example, he withdrew many times to take time to be one on one with his Father, He was passionate about two things in this world, God and people. So simple, yet it seems to elude us as the church. We get caught up in church politics, gossip, or just become too busy and we are missing out on the depth and dimension that God desires us to have in our relationship with him. When was the last time you talked to God, the way you talk to your spouse, best friend or closest relative? He wants to be so much closer than that to us.
We need to get back to the basics of life and show a world that is falling farther and farther away from God, what it really means to have a relationship with God. In the last year I have been on a journey and by no means have I 'arrived', however I have really begun to understand true intimacy with God. It is truly life changing, when God becomes the love of your life. How do you get such a depth of intimacy in your love for God? Love Him. It is that simple. Love Him more than anything else in your life and you will find that you desire to read the Bible, and talk to Him constantly. It is time that we as the church love Jesus the way a bride loves her groom. It is time to be so in love with God that we practically glow. When people see this type of love, it will change the world.
