What If...

June 22, 2022

Have you ever wondered what if? I am sure all of us at some point have wondered about the result of our present actions. There is another set of 'what ifs' that can have us going around in circles anxiety increasing with each next scenario.

I will give you an example, I receive a text message from my boss saying, "We need to talk" and begin thinking:
What if I messed up on something important?
What if I get in trouble?
What if this gets written up and put in my permanent file?
What if I get suspended from work without pay?
What if they get fired?
What if I can't find another job?
What if my family ends up living on the streets because we can't pay the mortgage?

See how easily it can spiral out of control. Most times the talk is about a meeting coming up or a task they need to be completed in the next few days. When we have this intense negative monologue it can drive us to extreme anxiety and stress.

My sister reminded me recently how I can use this inner monologue in a way to inspire and motivate me instead of creating anxiety. Instead of the negative I switch it to the positive. Regarding the same example above I could focus on the opposite.
What if my boss wants to thank me for the extra work I put in?
What if my boss want me to take on more responsibility?
What if my boss want to reward me?
What if I am getting a raise?
What if I get a promotion?
What if I have enough money to pay off my debts and get my mortgage paid down early?

These 'what ifs' will get you picking up the phone to talk to your boss, you will be motivated to talk to them, whereas with the negative ones, one might avoid calling the boss and maybe even call in sick the next day. The negative cycle keeps you stuck and terrified to move forward, the positive helps you stay moving forward, motivated and excited about what is next for you.

It is powerful how one shift in mindset can place you on a completely different course. Earlier this week, I had a moment when I had a choice to jump onto the negative train or stay chugging along on the positive one. My thoughts were about my future and what would happen, in the past these thoughts usually led to me wondering how we would make it financially and trying to think of ways to bring in extra money. This time I started seeing how each step I have been taking has led me to where I am right now, and it will continue on from here. More and more I am believing in myself and understanding the purpose and destiny I have.

2 Corinthians 4:18
So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.

Remembering this is key. In those moments when I am faced with the decision. I need to stop take a second and remind myself of where I know God is leading me, then I can calmly take the positive road and continue moving forward.

Personal Note: This shift takes practice and may not come easily. Habits usually take 21 days to form so be patient and keep at it. Do not give up. remember if you ever need to talk to someone you can always contact me.
