Eaten Alive - Hatred and Unforgiveness

August 25, 2022

Hatred. What a strong word, but effective. If you have allowed anger towards someone to continue to build, it will grow beyond bitterness into hatred. I am exceptionally good at loving others; however, the one person I struggled to love was myself. Constantly looking at my shortcomings, I began to despise myself. Many times, we get overwhelmed by our failures and cannot see anything else. It took me years to discover that the person I spent so much time hating did not exist. The real me did fail and have flaws, but I was so much more than that! I was a strong, courageous person who made it through some very traumatic experiences.

The person who hurt you is not the villain your mind has made them out to be…at least in most cases. It is usually someone who said something inadvertently or did something without thinking. If you have not confronted them, it is highly likely they may not even know they hurt you. Even those that have hurt us the most need to be forgiven and let go of; otherwise the hatred will turn you into someone you don’t want to be. It will eat you alive and leave you with the debris of broken relationships, and something that once resembled a life.

This is not easy to do and I know many of you are struggling with even thinking about forgiving certain people in your life. It is time to release the villains from the prison of hatred in your mind and set yourself free in the process.

Have you ever spoken nicely to someone you hate and pretended everything was good between you? Proverbs 26:24-26 People may cover their hatred with pleasant words, but they’re deceiving you. They pretend to be kind, but don’t believe them. Their hearts are full of many evils. While their hatred may be concealed by trickery, their wrongdoing will be exposed in public. I don’t ever want that to be me.

Proverbs 12:10 Hatred stirs up quarrels, but love makes up for all offenses. It is amazing how love can change everything. Jesus told us to love our enemies, this goes against everything  our society teaches us. We are entitled to our anger and we have the right to hate people if we want to. This is true, but what are you willing to give up to hold onto it? Your friends, your family, your job, your life? We were meant to live not just survive and the moment you hold onto anger rather than letting it go, you have shifted gears into survival mode. To truly live you must be free from the things that hold you back, such as anger, bitterness and hatred.

Ephesians 4:31-32 Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.

If you want to experience freedom in life it is time to love and time to forgive.

Personal Note: If you hate someone, even yourself and are having a hard time letting go, feel free to reach out to me. I would love to help you walk through it.
