Modesty is in my opinion true beauty. It is a by-product of self respect, inner strength and a healthy self esteem. People who are modest tend to believe that they deserve the best life has to offer. People who are modest also tend to believe the best about themselves instead of the worst.
On the other hand those who are not modest in their appearance tend to lack self respect, and are usually easily manipulated and think less of themselves. They also tend to take whatever they can get no matter how harmful or destructive it may be. When this happens it typically starts a cycle of self hatred. Once on this destructive road it usually continues to get worse unless something happens to help the person realize their self worth.
Why is the link between modesty and self worth so strong? I believe the answer to that question goes back to God. When Israel was instructed on how to live life, they were instructed on modesty. In the New Testament the instruction of modesty continued. God wants what is best for us. He doesn't want us to doubt who He created us to be and when we cheapen ourselves by what we wear we do just that. Instruction on modesty is there not to take the fun out of our lives but to help us live our lives to the fullest and not be hindered by our own negative thoughts.
Other people who are not modest in their appearance do not suffer with low self esteem, they have the opposite issue, they tend to think of themselves as better then everyone else. These people also tend to be prideful and allow their ego to control their decisions. This can be dangerous as well because then we think that there is no need for God in our lives and we think we are essentially the one in control of the world around us. When something happens that is out of their control then their whole world shatters around them and the results are not pretty. These people are ruled by their pride and have trouble having real deep friendships because inside they believe they are better than others. The only people that they seem to gravitate to are others who are just like them. They also tend to be self-centered and not see the needs of others around them. The stress and pressure of this lifestyle is what hinders these people from living life to the fullest and holds them back from the life God has for them.
God wants us to reach out to those in need and to help others. God wants us to realize who we are in Him and not to try to be Him. When we try to control everything we fail. No human can control everything in the world, only God is powerful enough for that.
This is why I believe modesty is true beauty. The most beautiful people in the world are those like Mother Theresa, who live their lives for others, and allow their appearance to exemplify that.
